Marking the end of a year long HLF project to digitise the photographs of Borough Photographer Egbert Smart this event will celebrate his work and the history he recorded. There will be a display of some of Egbert’s photos from the 1950s & 1960s, which having been newly digitised will likely not have been seen before. We invite you all to share your memories of the places he records from Egbert Smart’s time to the present day and tell us what they mean to you.
Smart was also a member of the Dagenham Co-operative Film Society and we will be screening some of these films throughout the day.
Artist and project partner Verity-Jane Keefe has researched and produced six audio walking guides based on the work of Egbert Smart. These are split into six distinct character areas, namely Becontree; Chadwell Heath & Marks Gate; Dagenham East to Rush Green; Dagenham Village & Beyond; Barking & Beyond; and South of the A13, Riverside, Thames View+. We will be launching the audio guide for Becontree on this day.
Print on demand service will allow you to take away a print of your favourite Egbert Smart photograph along with a copy of some of the new photographs books produced as part of the project.
At 6.30pm there will be a quiz to test your knowledge of all things Egbert Smart and Barking & Dagenham!
Free. Drop in. Refreshments and snacks will be provided throughout the day.
