The Strawboard Collection, previously referred to as the 'illustration collection', was created by staff of Dagenham Borough Libraries Department, who worked at Valence House Museum between 1937 and 1965. It is not dissimilar to other library and local studies image collections of this period, in that photographs were gathered together from various sources, including from within other collections held by the Museum, such as the the glass and copper plates of Dagenham Borough Council, as well as the Egbert E. Smart Collection, and then pasted onto stiff card (known as strawboard) to aid access and labelling.
